On Saturday, July 15th, Dominion Group Properties held it’s 6th Annual Charity Chili Cook-Off at Bison Ranch to raise funds for our local food bank. And, thanks to Donna Doss, this year the event was combined with a classic car show and several local vendors, adding even more fun for the attendees! The Event was again a huge success, with registrations, sales receipts and donations coming in at $3,000, one hundred percent of which was donated to our local food bank.
The event got under way at 9 a.m., with thirteen teams and fourteen registrants (one team registered to make two different kinds of chili) slicing and dicing, smoking and cooking their secret brews that were destined to become some of the best tasting chili our event has ever seen. While the teams were hard at work, Mr. Music Karaoke
and DJ Service (Royce Kincanon, 928.892.9065) spun the hits to entertain and the young ones enjoyed play time on
the Jumping Castles (compliments of Bill Carnes and Bison Town), while the adults enjoyed the classic car show and shopping with local vendors and at the Shops At Bison Ranch. The Wild Women Saloon & Grill offered up cold brews at their Beer Garden to quench the thirsts of those waiting for the grand event – the public tasting!
At 1:30, the teams delivered their chili to the judges for scoring and the public tasting began. The chilies ranged from white to green to red, with some offering a mild flavor and others scoring high on the heat index, and everything in between. Mother Nature cooperated again this year, with clouds hovering and a few rumbles of thunder clapping, but no rain, keeping it the perfect temperature for a day out in our fresh mountain air. All-in-all, we couldn’t have asked for a better day!
Here’s how the teams scored with the judges and the public (People’s Choice) in this year’s event:
- 1st Place: All About Smokin’ Q
- 2nd Place: Toys 4 BBQ’n
- 3rd Place: Smoked Out BBQ
- Best Theme: Loot-N-Booty BBQ
- People’s Choice: Your Behind BBQ
In addition to raising funds from team and vendor registrations and the public tasting, we received several donations from near and far to add to the dollars raised, including: 1) J & H Designers (Jeffrey & Henry; Overgaard, AZ), 2) Dr. & Mrs. Bob Rigsby (Alta Monte Springs, FL), 3) Chevron/Dairy Queen (Overgaard, AZ), 4) Dominion Group Properties (Overgaard, AZ).
We’d like to thank our judges for volunteering their time: Mike from Baker’s Ponderosa Café, June Call of Tenney Properties and Jim Piva of Overgaard Cheveron. And, thank you Pam at Cabin Fever for helping us out with the wonderful trophy designs. We’d also like to thank all the teams and vendors, the classic car owners and the attendees who participated in this event, as well as the donors and staff who brought it all together, including
Sammie Fox, Bob and Merilyn Smolinski, our entire office staff, Donna Doss, Bison Town and its staff (thank you Ken!). And, thank you to our generous community, who came out for the day and participated in our event. If it weren’t for all the participants, donors, helpers and attendees, this event would not have been such a huge success!
