We live or holiday in this “Vacation Destination”, but hunger never takes a holiday. Unbeknownst to most of us, we have neighbors who would go hungry everyday if not for the Rim Country Senior/Community Center’s (RCSC) Meals on Wheels (MOW) program. RCSC serves hot meals and food pantry items to shut-ins, the elderly, folks on hospice and the disabled every Monday through Friday. Many of your neighbors are unable to go grocery shopping and are too unwell or frail to prepare daily meals. RCSC has been committed to providing these meals for over 15 years and we have the volunteers to deliver them every weekday. But this takes money…

$35K to $40K annually to put it bluntly. Thanks to Kay Roberts who had the fabulous idea to hold a walkathon, we are announcing that on Saturday May 26, 2018, on Memorial Day weekend, RCSC will hold its first annual Meals On Wheels Walkathon Festival fundraiser!

The Walkathon is an easy walk and doable for most people.¹ It’s only two miles – one mile out and one mile back. Those who wish to walk further will do the route in multiples.  To clarify, the location was initially going to be the Mogollon Airpark; however, the venue has been changed to our own RCSC property at 2171 B Street which is located a block south of Highway 260 in Overgaard, off of Senior Center Drive. The Walkathon will be a well-marked two-mile-long route ranging from the RCSC to the State Route (SR) 260 sidewalk to Black Mesa Ranger Station. From there it will leave SR 260 through a portion of the forest to Tall Timbers Park. At the BIG TREE walkers will turn around and head back the same route. There will be water stations and guides all along the route.

All participants will need to complete a Registration form and a Walker Pledge/Waiver of Liability form. For a minimum $25 paid donation level, participants receive a free lunch at the event plus a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to Dairy Queen. All walkers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Festival will include a Craft Bazaar, a huge bake sale, local vendors, raffle items and door prizes. Addie’s Thrift Shop will be open for business as well. The $4 Lunch Deal includes either a pulled pork sandwich or hot dog, chips, soft drink and a cookie and is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Free samples of our new Take & Bake Pizza will be available.

From 9 a.m. to noon is the Kid Zone – Face painting and fun tattoos, coloring contests (to be judged by MOW recipients), prizes, carnival games, Heber-Overgaard fire truck, and other special surprises will be going on for the children’s entertainment. Parental participation is required.

There is a limit of 400 walkers, so turn in your forms to ensure your participation. We need Corporate Sponsors, Team Sponsors, Walking Teams, and Event Volunteers.

There are three levels of corporate sponsorship:

  • Gold $300 Donation/Sponsor 12 walkers (Buys 60 MOW meals) – Sponsor’s name pinned on sponsored walkers and prominently displayed on a RCSC wall for one year; entity logo on RCSC website for one year; plus, a table at the event, if desired.
  • Silver $200 Donation/Sponsor 8 walkers (Buys 40 MOW meals) – Sponsor’s name pinned on sponsored walkers; entity logo on RCSC website for one year; plus, a table at the event, if desired.
  • Bronze $100 Donation/Sponsor 4 walkers (Buys 20 MOW meals) – Sponsor’s name on RCSC website for one year and table at event, if desired.
  • Single Presentation Table $10

All donations² go exclusively to the Meals on Wheels program serving Heber-Overgaard and are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law³.

But, most importantly, the act of helping our most vulnerable senior residents – many of whom are veterans – is priceless.
