The Mogollon Rim News is sorry to post the following press release from Navajo County Sheriff Department:
On November 7th, 2017 at 12:15 P.M. a Fed Ex driver went to the residence at 2154 South Woods in Overgaard to deliver a package. When the driver walked up to the residence he saw smoke coming from the eve vents of the residence as well as the front door. The driver attempted to make entry into the residence calling to the neighbors to call 911. The Navajo County Sheriff’s dispatch center sent Heber/Overgaard fire personnel and Sheriff’s Deputies to the scene. Due to the amount of smoke coming from inside the residence no one could make entry until fire personnel arrived with air packs and fire suppression equipment. Once the fire was extinguished, fire personnel located a body on the floor in the living room. Fire Investigators as well as NCSO Criminal Investigation personnel arrived on the scene to conduct an investigation.
The deceased was identified as Barbara E. Martinez (70 years old) and this was her residence. Investigators believe the origin of the fire was a burning cigarette that fell into the cushions of the living room couch. Barbara resided at the house with 3 dogs. One dog was found deceased inside the residence, a neighbor located the second, and the third dog has not been located.
