Tips for Getting Your Home Ready to Sell

As we enter March, now is the time a lot of sellers start thinking about Spring cleaning and preparing their home for sale. Although, our current temps may not feel like Spring is near- it will be here before we know it!

In order to get the best price and the shortest market time for your home, here are some helpful tips to take into consideration:

Paint- A fresh coat of neutral color paint can have a huge impact for a relatively low cost.  Pay special attention to baseboards, moldings and other high traffic areas.  Also, consider avoiding wildly different colors from room to room.  The paint color scheme should flow thru the entire house. No room should feel like its in a completely different home from the others, as this can also be very distracting for buyers.  You want buyers to fall in love with the features that your home has to offer and not be distracted by overly contrasting colors.

Pack it Up- While we all love our decorations, family photos, mementos and collections of all sorts- these things can overwhelm buyers.  For some buyers it may interfere with their efforts to visualize themselves living in your home. Interior design experts recommend removing all family photos.  It’s best to minimize decorations as well.  A few well-placed wall hangings or a few items on a shelf or counter goes a long way to present a clean and uninterrupted visual of your home.  Also consider removing some items of furniture to make rooms look larger and less crowded.

Make it Sparkle- Clean like you’ve never cleaned before!  Buyers will notice everything- those cobwebs in the corner, dusty blinds, dirty oven, windows, sinks, tubs, toilets, etc.  Give everything a nice good deep scrubbing and clean.  Potential buyers will consider your home well maintained if it sparkles!

Freshen it Up- Curb appeal and first impressions count!  Give your exterior a boost by cleaning decks & rain gutters, removing pine needles, cleaning off entryways and washing windows.  Even the front door may look more inviting with a fresh coat of paint.  A few colorful potted annuals can also make an entrance more inviting.

Other things to consider before listing your home are: repairing leaky faucets, running toilets, broken or loose stair railings, addressing any wood rot, and any other little things that will set your home apart from its competition.
